We’ve seen pod2g and his A5-targeting “dream team” of iOS hackers make huge leaps and bounds towards their goal of getting the Corona jailbreak exploit running on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Earlier this week, a video preview showed the jailbreak in operation, leaving us hopeful that a release would soon be made. Today, new updates discuss the final stages of packaging the jailbreak tool for distribution, and suggest we’ll be seeing it arrive in a matter of “some hours”.
Most users will be able to use the GUI-based tool that will be released for Mac and PC users. A command-line-based tool will offer users finer control over the execution of this jailbreak; since new techniques are being used to load the exploit code onto devices, there’s the opportunity for running into unforeseen issues, and hopefully this flexible tool will aid in sorting them out. Eventually, the jailbreak will be added to redsn0w.
Despite earlier advisement to update to iOS 5.0.1 before 5.1 is released and it’s no longer possible, the devs are now warning iPhone 4S users against such haste. The issue is that if you’re interested in the possibility of a future carrier unlock, you’ve got a lot better chances of seeing a tool released if you stay on 5.0, instead of upgrading to the baseband used by 5.0.1.
With any luck, we’ll see the jailbreak released for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 before the end of the day.
Update: Well, speak of the devil! Absinthe, as it’s being called, has now arrived.
