We all know how frustrating it can be to try and divine Apple’s intentions when it comes to upcoming hardware, but that hardly keeps us from trying. While the next iPhone is still months and months away, a new iPad should be arriving much sooner. We’ve heard plenty of rumors about the components that will be used in the next generation of Apple gear, and the prospect of a new quad-core processor has come up more than once. Today, a series of pictures has been released that purport to show an iPad 3, including signs of just such a new processor.
These screens claim to show an iPad 3 running the iBoot debugger, revealing a few things about the tablet in the process. For instance, the software reports that it’s running on an ARM-based S5L8945X processor; the A5 chip in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S is the 40X. As should be no surprise, there’s evidence of two iPad 3 models, J1 and J2, for a WiFi-only version and one with full cellular radios. This time, that will supposedly include LTE and support for new carriers (is this finally T-Mobile’s chance?).
There’s no guaranteeing it, but it seems likely we’ll end up seeing this new S5L8945X chip also included in the iPhone 5, currently expected for early fall.
