According to John Stanton, Chairman of venture capital firm Trilogy Partners, Steve Jobs wanted to create his own mobile carrier and bypass network operators. Stanton and Jobs spent some time together between 2005 and 2007 discussing the possibility.
Even though Jobs dropped the idea, his own carrier would have been based on the unlicensed spectrum used by wireless networks. “He wanted to replace carriers,” Stanton said. “He and I spent a lot of time talking about whether synthetically you could create a carrier using Wi-Fi spectrum. That was part of his vision.” We know that Steve Jobs has been named a “control freak” several times and his vision for an own carrier would have further enhanced Apple’s control over products and services.
