Apple’s next iPad is finally here, and for those of you Apple users who prefer living outside the walled garden, work’s already well underway on the first public jailbreak for the tablet. The iPhone Dev Team recently put up a new blog post outlining where current efforts lie, and the situation is definitely looking promising.
Right now, only Apple gear based on older chipsets has an iOS 5.1 jailbreak available for it, and even that’s semi-tethered. As for the iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and 2012 iPad, there’s no public solution available; what about private?
At least two, and possibly three or four separate jailbreak avenues are being persued by different groups. Some devs, like i0n1c, have already posted teasers of their progress, showing iOS 5.1 compromised on an iPad 2. Beyond his technique, there’s also reportedly an old iPad 2 exploit that is supposed to also work on the new iPad, there may be progress on a different front from an unnamed dev close to Cydia, and pod2g’s presumably been looking into things himself.
None of this means you should expect to see a jailbreak released tomorrow, but it’s very promising news, all the same. In the meantime, the Dev Team warns against updating your new iPad, just in case Apple releases some 5.1.x follow-up I the near future.
Update: Still no public release, but: boosh!
