Nothing like a good rumor to start the week. It seems Apple has just hired Benjamin Vigier as their new Product Manager of Mobile Commerce. Who’s Ben? Well, he’s the guy behind the PayPal Mobile app, Sprint’s MyMoneyManager and the iPhone-based Starbucks Card.
Why does the new title ring a bell? Well, given his proved expertise in getting financial stuff to go mobile, we can only assume that Apple’s really taking this to a more serious level. Smartphones and financial services have never really done a good job in getting along until apps solved many of the security flaws mobile browsers have never been able to address. Whether it’s improvements to current services or something innovative like figuring out how to get us to pay at stores through our PayPal accounts using an iPhone is yet to be seen.
We sadly don’t have many details as to what type of commerce is Apple interested in invading through Ben’s project management. Whatever it is, let’s hope it’s better than just a new way to purchase concert tickets..
