When we looked at a couple new rumors about iPad hardware earlier today, we mentioned expecting a spate of such claims to surface over the course of the next week, leading up to Apple’s event on Wednesday, March 7. Sure enough, now we’re checking out some evidence that suggests Apple may not be planning to go with the name iPad 3, and the tablet could be the iPad HD, instead.

To be fair, there hasn’t been much evidence so far supporting any one possible name for Apple’s next-gen iPad, and that includes iPad 3. Gizmodo got to digging around some product listings from accessory manufacturers, and noticed a few mentions of products designed for the iPad HD.

While that find certainly lends some credence to that being the tablet’s name, it’s hardly a smoking gun. The evidence becomes a little more convincing once we also factor-in the name iPad HD showing up in some server logs. Besides sporadic reports of devices self-identifying as iPad HDs, logs also show these devices claiming the tablet’s expected 2048 x 1536 resolution.

This still feels a long way off from being anywhere near proof of the next iPad’s name, but we’ll admit that it’s an intriguing possibility; maybe we’ll see some more evidence arrive over the next few days that will help narrow-down the tablet’s moniker with some certainty.

Update: In further iPad news, we just learned that Best Buy has started selling its iPad 2 models on discount, suggesting it’s trying to clear stocks before next week.
