Last we heard from pod2g, back at the end of March, he was still poking away at iOS 5.1 on the new iPad, looking for weaknesses that might eventually lead to the release of a public jailbreak. At the time, pod2g urged patience, pointing out that even if the needed exploits were known, it would still take some time to develop them into a tool ready to be released. It seems that he’s had some good luck since then, recently tweeting the announcement of his discovery of a pair of a new exploits.

Those previous warnings stand, and exploits don’t automatically equal jailbreaks, but pod2g finding both a new kernel-land and a new root-land exploit certainly sounds like reason to be cautiously optimistic.

There’s a chance, though, that pod2g might hold-off on developing a new jailbreak until the release of iOS 6, presumably arriving this fall alongside the next iPhone. Considering how long it’s taking to get a jailbreak together, maybe it would be worth not letting Apple know how these exploits work in the hopes they’ll still be present in iOS 6, setting things up for a quickly-available jailbreak. He’s got a poll going on his blog right now, asking readers for their input on the choice. For the moment, at least, visitors seem soundly in favor of getting a jailbreak out now, iOS 6 be damned.
