AT&T may not be the supreme authority of iPhone sales that it once was during its period of exclusivity carrying the Apple smartphone in the US, but it still has close ties to the company, and its employees are privy to insider information that we could only dream of. Sometimes that information can get released before either AT&T or Apple have made official statements, when individual employees casually let slip details they might not realize are so interesting to us smartphone addicts. That could be the case with this latest revelation, where AT&T claims it’s been told by Apple that June and July are definitely out of the running for an iPhone 5 release, though leaving the window open for August and later.

This info supposedly comes from an interaction with an AT&T representative, where the customer was inquiring into his eligibility for a phone upgrade. He was told, “Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future. Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us.”

That may just be one employee’s way of saying “I don’t know; check back later”, but if so, it’s quite specific with its details. One of the potential launch dates we’ve heard for the iPhone 5 places it coming out sometime in September, which this claim would support. Could an August release even be possible?

Also new to the Apple iPhone 5 rumor mill, one anonymous source is claiming we’ll be seeing two such smartphones, a “pro” model and a “standard” one. Exactly what’s the difference between the two? The source didn’t say, and we’d really like to see even a little in the way of confirmation before believing that one.
