After recently being available for the Google Android platform, Sony Reader, its own proprietary eBook reader, should have been available for iPhone users too, that is if Apple wouldn’t have locked it out.

Apple’s motivation was, according to the New York Times, that developers, including Sony for its iPhone Reader app, could no longer sell content inside their applications or grant access to purchases outside the App Store. In other words, any purchase, in-app or not must go through Apple’s own store.

The measure also affects other providers like Amazon and Kindle; software like Sony’s own reader has to be either redesigned to fit these policies or risk being banned and loosing it’s (rather large) user pool. Neither Apple nor Amazon commented on the story but there might as well even be some anti-trust issues surfacing in the future. What do you think of the move?
