Over the last month or so, we’ve really seen interest in Apple’s next tablet heat up. Presumably to be called the iPad 3, we’ve spent the last several weeks fielding rumors about the tablet’s hardware, checking out some leaked photos, and wondering when Apple will finally announce the device. We looked at one pretty well-reasoned argument that the day would finally come on March 7, based on the timing for past Apple iPad events and scheduling availability for the venue the company seemed likely to use. Sure enough, today Apple’s sending-out invitations to just such a March 7 event, along with a very strong implication that it has iPad news to share.

The invitation itself shows a close-up on what appears to be an iPad, with the tight zoom subtly calling attention to the display’s image quality. From the hardware-related leaks we’ve seen so far, it’s seemed pretty much confirmed that Apple will be quadrupling the pixel count for the iPad 3, compared to the displays used in the iPad and iPad 2.

There’s still some uncertainty about the processor selection in the iPad 3, and if it it will feature an A6 chip or something called the A5X. In that vein, it’s unclear if the iPad 3 will remain powered by a dual-core processor, or be the first Apple mobile device with a quad-core chip.
