The Pantech Duo 2 Lives, Gets a New Name

Remember the original Pantech Duo? It was the first Windows Mobile device to have a dual-slider design like the Helio Ocean. In our review, we rated the Duo quite low at a 3/5, citing poor build quality, a too-thick design, lack of spring assist on the keyboard, and much more.

It looks like the second iteration of the Duo is coming to AT&T according to Engadget Mobile, but Pantech is scratching the “Duo” name (we don’t blame them) and are calling it the Matrix PRO. The Matrix is a non-smartphone device that has a similar form factor on AT&T, so the upgraded PRO seems to be a way of says “smartphone version.”

The Matrix PRO comes with HSDPA, Windows Mobile 6.1, and some usual other goodies. We’re unsure on release date and price, but it seems that we’re quite close to a release.

P.S. Has anyone noticed this trend of AT&T renaming feature phones to “PRO” when they slap on Windows Mobile non-touchscreen edition? They do it here with the Matrix, and they’re going to do it again for the Propel PRO.
