Sprint Embraces WiFi

File under: News

Sprint is embracing WiFi, making it a requirement for future smartphones. The move is a change of pace for the wireless industry as carriers have been reticent in adopting WiFi for fear of losing revenues to more lucrative smartphone data plans.

Sprint is in the midst of launching a BlackBerry device from Research in Motion called the Tour. The device launching this year will appear without WiFi, but a WiFi enabled Tour will be heading to Sprint early next year. Hopefully future Windows Mobile Standard and Professional devices will follow with WiFi.
