With the Sony Vaio P, Sony marked its entry into the netbook space, though the company refuses to call the expensive P model a netbook. Now, the company is marking a more committed effort into the netbook space, officially unveiling the Vaio W as such, with more pedestrian features and palatable price point at $500 in the USA.

Unlike the sleek, slim and narrow Vaio P, the W series is just like any other regular notebook and will compete with the likes of Acer, Asus, and HP. From a specs perspective, the W model doesn’t really differentiate itself too much from the Verizon HP Mini Note, though the latter is being offered with built-in EVDO 3G connectivity from Verizon Wireless in the US. With more mundane feature specs, we’d be hard pressed to recommend the Vaio W over similarly outfitted netbooks from American and Asian manufacturers priced at a lower point than the five bills Sony is hoping to take from you.
