Windows Mobile is about to head to yet another platform. Having started as a standalone PDA, Microsoft’s mobile OS sojourned to the smartphone and now is headed in a class of device called MID, or mobile internet device. The MID market has been relatively stagnant, with diehards using the Nokia Tablet. However, Samsung is joining the MID group and is bring Windows Mobile to the match, complete with 4G internet in the form of WiMax, which should be headed to Clearwire and Sprint in available 4G coverage areas.

Form factor, the Samsung Mondi, as the device is called, resembles the OQO mobile computer, with a tablet screen that slides over a QWERTY keyboard. The device has a 4.3-inch display and offers web browsing via Opera Mobile 9.5, not the latest blazing fast 9.7 with Turbo.

The Mondi can be used as a navigation device with integrated GPS. It comes bundled with some instant messaging (IM) clients and Fring, a VOIP-capable software.

Though pricing wasn’t disclosed, expect this in Best Buy stores or through Sprint and Clearwire August 1 in available 4G markets.
