Palm Treo 700w Blog: Day 10 – Bluetooth and Battery Life

Well, I’ve got the Treo for another 30 days. I’m still working with Microsoft and Palm on my OTA Syncing issue. I’ve still got intermitten problems that result in the device failing to sync.

I’ve also still got problems with the Bluetooth radio crackling like a popcorn popper when the device is in its case; but that was the last blog entry that I did…

Speaking of Bluetooth, I’ve noticed that the battery on this baby really tanks when the BT radio is on. I’ve noticed over the past 4 weeks or so that if I start using the device at 7:30am, I HAVE to recharge by 10:30am or else the device will die because the BT radio has been on, but the device has been idle (i.e. nominal calls have been made or received). That’s barely 3 hours worth of juice!

Turn off the BT radio and let the device sync with my Exchange Server only, and I start running out of power by like 1:30pm or so. Ok, that’s 6 hours, but when I’m not making a lot of calls, and the device is effectively in Stand-by most of the day, I’d really expect more longevity out of the battery, wouldn’t you?? I don’t want to sound overly disappointed, but man, I’ve almost run out of power on a few occasions and had to turn the cell radio off in order to save the device from a complete power loss. (I could at least still use it as a PDA until I got to an AC outlet. However, I did run out of power on 1 occasion other than the review…)

OK, Treo 700w users… What have you bumped into in terms of battery life. I think I might have been a little too kind on the device when I wrote the review. The thing could definitely benefit from a bigger, longer lasting battery. What have your experiences been? Tell me about them in the Discussion area.
