HP’s second generation ultra portable netbook, the Mini 1000, is said to have a hidden wireless 3G card that can be activated by loading the proper drivers. This is welcomed news to many, but for those in the US, it doesn’t mean a thing as North American 3G bands are not supported in the internal card that HP decided to use.
jkOnTheRun is speculating that there are several different Mini 1000 models floating around, with the US model not having a 3G card at all. HP was apparently hoping for carrier subsidization of the netbook, similar to cell phone subsidization through a wireless service provider, and included the cards for wireless access. There is no telling why the cards made it to the non-subsidized models as well.
