How to Get a Touch HD that does US 3G

Over in Touch Diamond2 vs. Touch HD thread, there is some nice debate going on as to which of the aforementioned devices is the best.

Within the many comments is one made by cgavula which reveals something very, very interesting, that we had not known before.

The Australian version of the Touch HD, the T8285, supports the UMTS 850 band. AT&T, in the US, does 3G over the 850 band in some places, and 1900 in other places. If you know for a fact that your area used the 850MHz band for 3G (I know my area does), you can pick up a Touch HD and have glories 3G data speeds.

The painful part? The T8285 Touch HD is very expensive – at $800 on or more on eBay.

So there you have it – a US 3G Touch HD.
