Analysis of the Upcoming HTC Snap – Q9h Killer?

Now that we have the official HTC page to look at, complete with full specs, we can run through some analysis on HTC’s latest non-touchscreen Windows Mobile device. As we’ve already reported, the device will be on sale in Q2 most likely in Europe. It will then be sold unlocked in the US in the summer, with a possible release on one of the carriers (we’re still thinking T-Mobile, perhaps in the Fall).

In terms of size, the Snap is almost a full millimeter thinner than the Dash, which is great. It is bit wider, and about the same height – the weight is also about the same.

The battery life on the Snap should be ridiculously good. It is packing a 1500mAh battery, a size only seen on higher-end devices that carry a touchscreen. For comparison, the original Dash had a battery that was 960mAh.

The Inner Circle function works by pressing the keyboard button in the bottom right corner. If you are in your inbox, pressing this key will filter out emails only from certain people that you pre-select.

The keyboard looks to be designed for ergonomics. Like the keyboard on your laptop or desktop, the keys on the Snap are offset. Also, they are raised in a dome-like fashion, which HTC claims to give excellent tactile feedback. We have yet to see a keyboard with domed keys, so we’ll have to see if they are right.

The BlackBerry Pearl-like trackball should allow for some really quick navigation. I was thinking the other day while using a Moto Q9h that it would be super sweet to have a WinMo Standard device with a trackball – it would make flipping through icons and emails super fast.

All in all, the HTC Snap may be the Motorola Q9h killer that we’ve be waiting for. Sure, it’s not a multimedia powerhouse like the Touch HD, but for those that want the ultimate in messaging productivity, this could be the one to add to the wish list.
