With no live stream being broadcast from Macworld, the folks at Engadget have been posting a play-by-play. The most interesting announcements (in my book, anyway): 9:30am - QuickTime 7 - 24 channels of surrond sound, support for high-def. video, live resizing. Full screen overlay One button audio and video recording. More transparent onscreen controls. Using H.264 as codec so it could transcode movies for PSP. (Or perhaps a PPC? Great competition for Media Center Edition) 10:01am - Steve showing off high-def wedding video. "We're anxiously awaiting Blu-ray so we can burn high definition ...

This just slipped under the CES radar, but not far enough for someone to catch it. According to the press release here, FrogPad and SCOTTeVEST are joining forces to create the first portable, one-handed, and fabric keyboard. A fascinating idea with a lot of potential. You can find our review of the Bluetooth iFrog here. And our recent review of SCOTTeVESTs Cotton 3.0 jacket here.

Microsoft has released version 1.5 of Voice Command into the wild. Most of the changes seem to deal with problems that phone and Media Player 10 users were dealing with. There is also Windows Mobile 2005 support built in. Existing users can upgrade for free (Handango purchasers may visit here). You can find our review of version 1 here.

Astraware has taken an outstanding step for the community by offering all proceeds from Bejeweled (in the month of January) towards Tsunami relief (specifically OXFAM and UNICEF). The letter from Howard: Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you all know that we're donating all of the purchases for Bejeweled in January to Oxfam (for Astraware purchases) and to Unicef (from our reseller partners) to try to contribute to the relief and rebuilding effort. PCWorld has posted some initial shots from CES and it looks like its going to be an exciting year. The first shot that really caught my eye was the Jabra headset with the built-in LCD. While not very "cool" looking, it certainly gives one a view into what to expect from manufacturers. More CES to come as we hear about it...

The initial images don't show much, but as far as devices go, this one looks pretty tiny. The User Manual for this device can be found here (FCC .pdf). What do you think of this device? Those of you who followed my recent X50v blog might have seen that I had used one of my spare iPAQ C2 screen protectors while I waited for official X50v screen protectors to be released. For the last week I've been using Pocket PC Techs' X50v C2 protectors, and I must say that I've been impressed. There is some bubbling at the edges, but not as much as on the 2200 series. The fit also seems to be a lot better. You can find our review of the iPAQ 2200 series C2 protectors here.

Greenlight Wireless have opened up a free web portal that takes advantage of their Skweezer service. Sign-up is not required, but recommended as you gain some very useful features. There is also a Pro version available ($14.99 per year) that eliminates ads, gives you faster performance, and unlimited email support. I, for one, am planning on trying this out today. Anyone else out there using Skweezer (free or otherwise)? If so, let us know what you think.

With only 64Mb of RAM, the X50v could really take advantage of some memory optimization. Whether this be storage location hacks (such as Avantgo), or just general maintenance, you can have all your apps installed PLUS still have plenty of operating memory. My current memory status? 21Mb Program / 7.5Mb Storage - and that's with just minor optimizations with a quite a few programs installed. The first thing I recommend trying is installing your applications to a CF card. I have a 1GB Lexar that I'm currently using 250Mb of for games, movies, and the like. Applications that interact directly ...
