WHAT'S HOT    I think the phrase "It's like TiVo for internet radio" sums it up pretty well. With Replay Radio you can schedule any internet audio stream to be recorded on a regular or one-time-only basis, and converted into the highly portable, and Pocket PC-friendly, mp3 format. It is a great way to listen to internet radio shows and stations "on-the-go" while having the power to ZAP the commercials via your favorite Pocket PC media player. SETUP    It should be noted that Replay Radio is a desktop program, not a program for the Pocket PC. However, ...

Last week I received an email from Avantgo urging me to update my software. I thought this was odd since I didn't see a thing on their site about this. It seems that if you are subscribed to a channel that "requires AvantGo software to be set to a preference of 'Use Secure Connection' (SSL encryption enabled)" then "you will be prevented from synchronizing with the AvantGo servers." After updating, the properties page in ActiveSync said I had "Ver. 4.2 Build 1160." But on the Avantgo software download page (Login>My Account tab>Softtware downloads link) they are still calling it "AvantGo ...

WHAT'S HOT    Six different games - Hangman, Mastermind, Hexapawn, Concentration, Jumbled Words, Arabian Blocks - for one low price. SETUP    I found the setup process to be very frustrating. First of all, it should be noted that IM Games Pack requires Microsoft .NET framework to operate. In many cases, you would already have this component installed on your devices (as I did). The trouble appears when you begin installing IM Games Pack. For one thing, this is not an all-in-one installation. You are actually installing six different games that are bundled in one ...

WHAT'S HOT    MessagEase presents users with an on-screen keyboard that offers full text entry (letters, numbers, special characters) with larger keys than the standard on-screen keyboard. It also offers an enlarged letter-only area for finger-based input. SETUP    Setup takes almost no time at all and no configuration whatsoever. Since it is an input method, you don't get to select the installation directory, but it does install a help file and images into your Windows directory. These files only take up 321 kb. PRODUCT FEATURES     Right from the start, ...

(sponsor) INTRODUCTION     From the day I finally discovered how to find "The Big Dipper" in the night sky, I've always been fascinated by the stars. Upon owning a Pocket PC, one of the first things I wanted to do was be able to find the constellations. Apparently I was not alone, because you can find several "Planetarium" software programs available for the Pocket PC. Yet you might just be surprised by how much more TheSky Pocket has to offer than simply pointing to Venus or Mars, read on to see what else this interesting piece of software can do. WHAT'S ...

It is an interesting concept: controlling your desktop PC with your Pocket PC. Now, thanks to a post on "The Code Project" you can do just that with "TabletPC Advanced Remote Control." Plus, it is free! (Note, it requires the .NET Compact Framework be installed) Despite having "TabletPC" in its title, this software has nothing to do with Microsoft's Tablet PC. Developed by By Vladimir Ralev, "TabletPC Advanced Remote Control" In is actually two programs. One for your PC, which acts as a "Server" and another to run on your Pocket PC device. It can be used with laptops, desktops or networked ...

PocketTV Classic, the free MPEG-1 video player for the Pocket PC, has just been updated to v0.13.11. This update includes: - Improved support for pre-rotated VGA-resolution files with ATI acceleration on devices with Imageon 3200, e.g. Toshiba e800 series. PocketTV now avoids re-using the display surface as much as possible, to reduce the problems with the VGA-Landscape modes of MyVGA and ResFix. In those MyVGA and ResFix modes, re-using the display surface does not work. It can be downloaded from the PocketTV website. Although it is free, you do have to register for an activation key.

WHAT'S HOT    Previously known as "Snapstream," the newly renamed "Beyond TV" (BTV) runs on your Windows-based PC and functions as a DVR (Digital Video Recorder). With the proper hardware (such as a TV card) you can have a PC that functions just like a TiVo and "beyond!" Some highlights include: encoding and archiving shows in Windows Media, Divx and/or MPEG-3 video format; using "Showsqueeze" to resize a program for viewing on a mobile device; no monthly fees; scheduling ...

Quite by accident, I ran across the website of Jean-François Mainguet. In his Pocket PC section he has several freeware applications, one of which is a clone of the old "Space Invaders" arcade game. Jean-François says: " I was searching for a version that is as close as possible from the original game released around 1978, and I didn't find anything satisfactory...So I modified the code to obtain this version." The game is a stand-alone EXE so once you extract the file from the Zip, just drop it in your My Documents folder, create a shortcut and re-live what at one time was considered ...

Recently when I was reading my Avantgo page I noticed an announcement for 1MB of extra storage capacity for free - if I would just update my profile. I wasn't able to find any official announcement about this upgrade and it may not be available to everyone. Still, if you use Avantgo be sure to look closely at the top of your login page to see if the offer is available to you. There were only a few short questions to answer, and Avatgo's Privacy policy states: "We only use this information in an anonymous aggregate manner - we do not associate this information with you as an individual." It ...

Hi, I'm Darren Garyson and I've just been added to the pocketnow roster. Coming from a broadcasting background, I've done a lot of writing. But now I finally get the chance to combine that with my love of technology, more specifically, the wonderful world of the Pocket PC! I've been a gadget junkie as long as I can remember. So, owning a Pocket PC just seemed natural. My PDA experience began two years ago with a Handspring Visor Deluxe, but it wasn't long before I wanted more. I made the switch to the Pocket PC (a Dell Axim) and I've never looked back. I'm always on the go so I make use of ...
