It looks like if the tweet that Microsoft's Oded Ran, which has since been deleted, is true, Microsoft will be hitting Apple where it hurts, bringing the fray of Windows Phone 7 devices to be compatible with the other desktop platform. Ran tweeted that the Zune desktop client will also be making its way to the Mac ecosystem, which would presumably bring synchronization, app management, and music discovery on OS X. Microsoft had never really embraced Mac users--an official desktop synchronization client was never released for the Windows Mobile ecosystem, but since the release of the KIN ...

While Brandon had learned that Windows Phone 7 devices do come with removable memory cards, those cards will not be user replaceable. Microsoft's Todd Brix had stated that fact when I had a chance to sit down with him at MIX10 in Las Vegas earlier this year, and Microsoft's recent statement to the matter confirms what Brix had already told us. According to Microsoft on its Windows Phone 7 website, "Windows Phone uses a special high–performance SD card that works differently than SD cards in other devices. When your phone is built and first set up, its internal storage and SD card are ...

For Verizon Wireless customers eager with envy of their T-Mobile brethren's T-Mobile G2 Android smartphone with its full hardware keyboard in landscape mode, Android blog Android Central has gotten a hold of the Verizon Wireless HTC Merge in a video. It's unclear if the final shipping retail units will be different from the unit that Android Central has obtained, but the video should give users a glimpse of the hardware and the awesome keyboard on the HTC Android device. The Merge is slated as a world phone, so it will support a SIM card for international travelers. Additionally, it is ...

Just when Apple and the public thought it could put Antennagate behind with the iPhone 4, a new issue related to the flagship Apple smartphone has just arose, and this time it has to do with the glass screen. The iPhone 4 uses glass for the front and rear panel, which CEO Steve Jobs claims to be of comparable strength to sapphire crystal, and is much more durable than plastic. A new report published by insurance warranty company SquareTrade states that iPhone 4 damaged screen claims are coming in at 87 percent more than on the iPhone 3GS. The company says that overall accident rate for the ...

A leaked photo of what looks to be the Palm Pre 2 has been caught floating around the Internet. If you're looking to switch to T-Mobile and are looking for a subsidized Android phone on a two-year service agreement, Amazon's pricing for the T-Mobile G2 is fairly attractive. While upgrading customers can continue to expect paying $199 for the newly launched Android smartphone, new customers can get the handset for $99 through Amazon and take advantage of the nation's fourth largest carrier's HSPA+ offering. For users looking for a hackable Android device, do keep in mind that the T-Mobile G2 hasn't been quite rooted yet. (via: IntoMobile)

There are now speculations over Motorola's next big Android handset that will launch after the Droid Pro. Dubbed the Motorola Terminator by Android and Me, the device is said to be launching with Android 3.0 and will be a gaming powerhouse that will take on Apple's iOS platform. While Android hasn't been strong on the mobile gaming department, companies like Motorola and Sony Ericsson, with its PlayStation Phone on Android 3.0 are hoping to change that. To accomplish its mission as a gaming device and achieve graphics prowess, the Motorola Terminator is rumored to be using an NVIDIA Tegra ...

Vertu, a Nokia company known for its exquisitely made luxury smartphones and beautiful designs, has never been known for its budget-conscious attitude and the company's Constellation Quest smartphone teaser is no exception. The Constellation Quest will be the first Vertu to feature a full QWERTY keyboard, and as such may be geared towards corporate executives who desire a bit of prestige over traditional BlackBerry offerings. The teaser shows a smartphone that looks to be a higher-end model of Nokia's more pedestrian E71, E71x, E72, E73, or E5 smartphones, which runs on the Symbian S60 ...

SuperOneClick is a Windows-only PC program so far that allows for easy, one click rooting of Android devices. Rooting, which was recently made legal and acknowledged by the U.S. government under the DMCA, allows users to get more from their Android devices and unlock potentials that carriers or OEMs may have not allowed at retail of their specific smartphone models. SuperOneClick makes it easy for consumers to gone through the rooting process, which many had previously considered a technical challenge for the average user. The process is as simple as the program's name implies. Start up ...

When the iPhone 4 was released, many had applauded Apple's decision to include a front-facing camera. However, that camera, up until now, uses Apple's proprietary FaceTime format, which so far has limited the iPhone's video chat and video calls to only between iPhone 4 devices, and only over WiFi (and not 3G networks at that). Now, thanks to Yahoo!, with its more widely used Yahoo! Messenger services, iPhone 4 users can begin to video chat between other devices that support Yahoo! Messenger, as we first reported last week. Currently, iPhone 4 users can chat over 3G or WiFi with video to ...

French carrier SFR is dropping hints that Palm, which was acquired by HP, will be launching the next generation Palm Pre 2, which will run on webOS 2.0. The Pre 2 is said to have a flatter screen rather than the curved and bulbous screen on the current generation device, and will have a more refined design. Also, in terms of hardware, the Pre 2 will have an improved processor, said to clock in at 1 GHz, along with 512 MB memory, which I think may indicate RAM memory rather than storage memory. SFR is touting the new webOS 2.0 as more intuitive and faster. (via: Pocket-Lint, PreCentral, and ...

Further fueling fire behind rumors of an iPhone on Verizon Wireless rumor, CDMA Development Group spokesperson Brad Shewmake told the WSJ that the CDMA group, which provides the standards that Verizon Wireless network in the U.S. is based upon, would provide a new CDMA standard to allow simultaneous voice and data that would come next year. Called SVDO, the new CDMA protocol wouldn't require expensive network hardware upgrade, though individual handsets would need to be built specifically for SVDO compatibility, meaning existing handsets won't be able to multitask. SVDO is coming the first ...

It looks like the mysterious Samsung Focus name that was revealed earlier in the leaked AT&T roadmap will in fact be the Samsung Cetus, a Windows Phone 7 device that's bound for AT&T in the U.S. market. The device was revealed on the Windows Phone webpage from Microsoft. Although I couldn't get the page to fully load (clicking on the Buy, and then the Windows Phone 7 link at the top), Engadget did manage to capture some screenshots revealing that November 8th will be the launch date for the U.S. market, a bit later than the rumored UK launch. With Qualcomm announcing that we should see products emerging with the company's Mirasol screen technology next year, including smartphones in the later part of the year, we wanted to catch up with the company to see how the screen performed. According to Qualcomm, the screen works even better with the more light it receives, meaning that like rival e-ink display (so far only available in black and white in commercial products like the Amazon Kindle), Mirasol should perform exceptionally well under direct sunlight. The advantage that Mirasol has is that it uses low power, can display ...

For those curious about Motorola's latest slab devices for U.S. GSM carriers AT&T and T-Mobile, we got to take a sneak peak at those devices at CTIA in San Francisco. Motorola is claiming that the Defy is meant as a life-proof device. Resistant to water, sweat, dust, dirt, and also rugged with its Gorilla glass display, the Defy is hopefully a fun device that you'll want to take with you. The Motorola Bravo will be a high-end AT&T Android device, featuring a large 3.7-inch FWVGA display.
