    Palm is buying the intellectual property and technology assets of Be Inc., makers of the BeOS and BeIA, for $11 million in Palm stock. Palm has offered jobs to Be's engineering team. More information is available in press releases on Palm's web site.

    Compaq has re-released the 1.77 ROM update for the iPAQ H3600 series after correcting "a communication error". No further details on what the error was are given on the Compaq site. The upgrade, which was originally released in May, fixes various issues with iPAQs, including alarm volume, backlight brightness, and the device hanging after a reset. It also added several enhancements. The re-released update is available here.

    Microsoft has announced the second beta release of Talisker (the code name for the next version of Windows CE). The preview program will make available an emulator to allow developers to begin work on the next generation of their products using a desktop Windows 2000 or XP machine.     According to a story on SiliconValley.com, some Palm owners are finding that the name HotSync is a little too accurate. A class-action suit was filed on Tuesday in San Francisco, claiming that Palm (and 3Com before it) knew about a defect that causes damages to the motherboards of certain PCs.

    Metricom is shutting down its Ricochet wireless internet service next Wednesday, August 8. The company had filed for bankruptcy last month, and has been unable to find a buyer to infuse cash. Following the closure, the assets will be auctioned on August 16. The closure affects 51000 subscribers in 17 cities and 14 states. Source: ZDNet

    Compaq has released a fix for users who have Windows NT/2000 and wish to sync with a serial connection. The download, available here, contains a fix that allows H3100 and H3600 series iPAQs to make a first time serial connection for ActiveSync. The fix forces ActiveSync to use COM1 or allows the user to choose a different COM port. The fix is only needed for Windows NT/2000, and is not needed for USB connections.

    The Wireless Advertising Association has approved a set of standards for WAP, SMS, and PDA advertising. The proposal was first released last month, and underwent a 30-day review period before being approved by the WAA. The standards call for a single set of formats and sizes for wireless ads. The standards include text length guidelines for GSM and non-GSM, text, graphic and interstitials for WAP, and guidelines for PDA and advertisements.     Casio is partnering with XcelleNet to bundle Afaria mobile device management software with Casio's Cassiopeia Pocket PCs. Afaria allows enterprises to perform software deployment, hardware and software tracking, information exchange and back-ups on mobile devices, complete with security features, such as 128-bit encryption, LDAP and Windows NT/2000 directory authentication.     If you watch the Food Network, you know all about kicking it up a notch. Now, you can kick Transcriber up a notch, with Calligrapher from PhatWare. For $49.95, you can have improved handwriting recognition on your PocketPC and HPC. Calligrapher 6.0, the current release, features PenCommander, which allows you to create macros and run them by writing the macro name and drawing a circle around it. PhatWare is running a "back to school" special, reducing the price to $39.95 for a limited time. A trial version is available.

    Have you ever wanted to recreate that commercial where the speaker has lost his speech and someone back at the office reads it to him on his PocketPC (even if he is holding it upside down)? You can, with the right network connections, and Microsoft Portrait, which is now being released as an alpha version. Portrait is available for both desktop Windows (from 95 through XP) and PocketPC. The video is black and white only, but this would seem to be the beginning of something nice.

    UR There International has moved into a new, larger facility, and their web site indicates it will be possible to move the new PocketPC OS into your @migo. The new address for UR There International is 21 NW 5th St., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33301. UR There hasn't issued a press release on the upgradability of the @migo, but the web site says that the @migo is "Upgradeable to Next PocketPC O/S". This comes after Compaq announced that the iPAQ will also be flash upgradeable to the next version of the PocketPC OS, due out later this year, or early next year.

    Recent news reports have featured high-tech pants and vests for PocketPC enthusiasts. But there's more than one way to combine technology and textiles. Enter soft texter, the fabric keyboard for PDAs. Produced by ElectroTextiles, the keyboard seems to be able to double as a keyboard and case for the PDA. Details are very limited, but Ludipocket.com reports that the keyboard are available for both Palm and PocketPC.

    They say you can't spell "geek" without EE.
