Whether we look at the unusual design of the supposed BBX London smartphone, or at the company’s shift towards embracing iOS and Android, it sure seems clear that there are some big changes going on internally at RIM. As a result, it’s harder than ever to evaluate rumors about the company’s direction, not really knowing what to expect from it anymore. With that in mind, we turn our attention this morning to a new rumor about the BlackBerry Surfboard.

Without knowing just where the source behind this information supposedly obtained it, we can’t speak to its veracity, so an appropriate amount of skepticism is in order. According to the rumor, that BlackBerry London we’ve seen – the one that might be a BBX launch handset – may now be known as the Surfboard.

Admittedly, “Surfboard” sounds much more like an internal code name than a finished phone RIM would release, but this isn’t all there is to the rumor. The source also claims that RIM’s secured sponsorship from within the surfing industry for an event planned to coincide with a surfing festival being held next year. That’s the kind of oddly specific news we don’t know if we should reject outright for just sounding so outlandish, or if those details suggest there might be something to it. Perhaps Surfboard won’t be a BBX device after all, but some new software tool tied to the platform? Until we hear more, it’s really hard to know what to think of these claims.
