RIM To License BlackBerry OS 10 To HTC, Samsung, Others: Report

After recent rumors around RIM and the possibility of the two co-CEOs stepping down, we now have a more recent report claiming the company “is likely to name Barbara Symiest as chairman”.

The information comes from Jefferies & Co.’s Peter Misek who also believes that Research in Motion is likely to license its BlackBerry OS 10 to other smartphone makers. Misek thinks “some of this has already been started with RIM likely agreeing to license Blackberry 10 to Samsung, HTC, and possibly others”. This, of course, could very well kill the already sick hardware division of RIM but could save the software side as well as keep the company above the water.

However, Samsung and HTC are very much involved with Google’s Android. Samsung also has its own operating system called Bada and the two OEMs are also manufacturing smartphones running Microsoft’s Windows Phone. Despite rumors of Samsung dropping Windows Phone by the end of 2012, it is unlikely we’ll see a Samsung device running BlackBerry OS. Parts of it maybe? Possible but probably unlikely. What do you think of the recent report?
