Ok, this is high up on my list of funniest things I’ve read all week, and it just got started. We’ve all read how much criticism RIM received over their recent move from firing their two old CEOs, and later replacing them with just half of one. We had real high hopes for Thorsten Heins when the changes were announced, but the guy blew all his credibility after he came on record to announce that all the company needed was a simple nick and tuck.
See, many of us believe that RIM needs a true revamp in their products and services, but the fact that their new leadership doesn’t, has all of us worried. To make matters worse, RIM’s director Roger Martin just left an interview with The Globe and Mail and decided to defend Heins by saying:
“So we’re supposed to hand it over to children, or morons from the outside who will destroy the company?” And later he stated: “They ask Why can’t you be more like Apple?’ So we should go bankrupt and fire our founders and bring in a moron? That’s what we should do?”
As a long-time Blackberry addict, I’m still surprised to see that they don’t get it. It doesn’t really matter if they hire CEO’s from the outside or from the inside. What matters is that they burry the old and pull up the new. I must hand it to their original co-founders for creating a brand out of nothing, but their problem is that they chose to believe that their business model didn’t need to change, and well, so does their new leadership right now. RIM clearly needs to change, and the only reason why any of us in the tech world consider that another change in leadership is needed, is precisely because the current one still misses the point.
The only reason why I assume they ask them to be more like Apple, is because Apple didn’t fear moving into the portable music player market with the iPod, or into the smartphone market with the iPhone, even if they were just a computer company before that. Again, change is the only constant that should exist in a technology company, and RIM needs a lot of it if they plan to compete.
