How well has your BlackBerry Bold 9900 been holding up to abuse? We try to be as gentle with our smartphones as possible, but accidents have a way of happening despite our best intentions. If you’ve got a Bold 9900, have you noticed it rolling with the punches, or is it already starting to show signs of battle damage? The subject comes up tonight thanks to a newly-leaked document which appears to recognize a design fault in older shipments of 9900s, and offers an extended warranty to compensate.
The interesting thing about this warning is that the design flaw supposedly isn’t one with the phone itself, but with the holster initially provided with the handset. RIM’s noticed that the holster had a habit of getting caught against the 9900’s keypad, such that if you tried to put the phone away too quickly, or forced it in the holster after getting stuck, you ran the risk of breaking a few keys loose.
New holster are apparently out that mitigate the issue, but if you’ve got one of those earlier accessories, be extra-careful with your phone. If you end up knocking some keys off, RIM has got you covered for the time being, extending the phone’s warranty to 18 months. At some point, though, you might want to think about scoring a new holster.
