RIM Demonstrates Its BlackBerry Torture Tests (Video)

Every once in a while a display manufacturer comes along to an expo event and has a new take on flexible screens to show us. It’s probably still a long way’s off before we see that tech hit retail availability, but some of the demos we’ve seen are really starting to get impressive. In the meantime, though, we’ll just have to keep remembering not to try bending our phones. At least, we have no interest in breaking our own expensive hardware, but that doesn’t stop RIM from doing its own torture tests. In such experiments, the company looks for points of failure, hoping to learn lessons from all these poor, mangled phones that will keep future models working better for longer.

In addition to describing some aspects of its testing procedures on its official blog, RIM has prepared a series of video clips showing its devices under this sort of destructive trial-by-fire. It’s almost painful to watch handsets slowly bent past the point of breaking. A phone drop test may not sound that interesting, but when we have the results to view in super-slow-mo, you can see the supposedly solid handset wobble around like a wood saw when it strikes the hard ground.

You can watch the destruction in the clips below, or check-in with RIM itself for additional details on its testing procedures.
