Here’s a neat trick for busy on-the-go BlackBerry users who never remember to leave enough time to properly charge their phones, one that’s been confirmed as working (and more importantly, safe) by RIM:

While the default charger for BlackBerry models only outputs 700 mA of current, the PlayBook – just as you’d expect from a tablet with a larger battery and heavier power needs – uses the BlackBerry Premium Charger which pumps out juice at 1800 mA. Plug the Premium Charger into a normal BlackBerry smartphone, and you should see your handset now charging at about twice the rate.

If you tend to get freaked out upon hearing stories of cell phone batteries exploding and injuring their users, take note, because RIM says that even though you may notice your BlackBerry getting quite hot as the battery sucks up all that power, it’s nothing that’s outside the range of acceptable temperatures.

Sure, these phones use just a standard Micro USB connection, and you should be able to pull off the same feat with any compatible charger capable of outputting the same current, but we feel a whole lot better about stressing-out our batteries when we’re using officially-sanctioned accessories. There’s no word on what any of this will do to battery life over time, but the kind of user who’s fretting over a slow-to-charge battery is likely one more concerned with the here-and-now, anyway.
