A recently leaked Research in Motion document, marked confidential, was seen portraying a device with the name BlackBerry Bold R020. The R020 would most likely be a codename to a device that succeeds the BlackBerry Bold 9700–the device retains the former’s form factor while doubling the amount of RAM, adding support for BlackBerry 6 OS, and utilizing the 5-megapixel camera from the BlackBerry Torch 9800, and like the Torch, the R020 may not be capable of HD video capture.
The device will continue BlackBerry’s use of a 624 MHz processor and HVGA touchscreen, which many have criticized as being under-specced for a high-end flagship smartphone. The R020 would most likely be a non-touchscreen GSM edition that would be a good BlackBerry alternative to the recently launched BlackBerry Torch.
We had previously reported of a Bold 9700 successor by the name of the BlackBerry Bold 9780, and these internal RIM documents probably show the R020 as the codename to the Bold 9780, the latter most likely the consumer branded moniker.
