Following the initial reveal of the Blackberry Torch 2′s supposed spec-boosted hardware, BGR has gotten the opportunity to try out the new Torch first-hand, and it looks like the big CPU speed bump over the original Torch, along with the inclusion of BlackBerry OS 6.1, make for a greatly improved smartphone experience.

While the first Torch ran at 624MHz, the Torch 2 will be clocked nearly double that, up to 1.2GHz. The BlackBerry’s display is also getting the same kind of makeover, with a higher-density screen that drives nearly twice as many pixels. BGR doesn’t go into much detail about just how the hardware changes contribute to better performance, short of noting that the combination of new hardware and software “offers a great experience”.

If you were a big fan of the Torch but just wanted a little more “oomph” from your phone, you’re in luck, as the Torch 2 will be a near cookie-cutter copy on the outside, with the same form-factor and measurements.

When we first heard about the Torch 2, its release was predicted for late Q3 of this year. You may not have to wait quite so long for the smartphone, after all, with the latest rumor putting its release in July, following a formal announcement in May.
