BlackBerry OS 7.1 Getting New Battery Saving Mode

The introduction of new features to RIM’s BlackBerry OS has a way of catching us off-guard. We’re not talking about major releases, mind you, but the company has a way of dropping new features as components of ROMs that often leak out in advance. That’s just what happened with BlackBerry OS 7.0.1.74 for the Bold 9900 last fall, which quietly added support for a WiFi hotspot mode. Today, we learn of a new BlackBerry feature in just such a manner, upon the discovery of a battery saving mode in OS 7.1.0.247.

The update leaked out yesterday for the Bold 9790. Owners who elected to install it started poking around to look for changes, and found the battery-saving option now included among device settings.

We’ve seen this same kind of system on other platforms, where you specify a remaining charge cut-off level, below which your phone starts conserving energy in overdrive, hoping to last long enough for you to get to a charger.

In the short time since its discovery, the mode has been spotted on other devices running in-development builds of 7.1, including the Bold 9900. Look for it to officially come to these and other Black Berry OS 7 devices in a future update from RIM.
