For RIM, the move to the Unix-based operating system, known as QNX, will be a big step forward for their phones. Coupled with dual core CPUs, the new platform could give RIM a new weapon in the smartphone wars. The BlackBerry playbook, due out later this year, runs QNX, which has enabled RIM to innovate in new areas with the tablet.
A leaked roadmap from RIM shows a release of the next version of the BlackBerry operating system, version 7, landing later this year. While the roadmap doesn’t necessarily imply that it’ll be QNX-based, one would have to assume that the company would be striving to push out the new platform by end of year.
