Remember the ZTE Skate, revealed at the Mobile World Congress last month? We’d forgive you if it didn’t ring a bell, as ZTE isn’t the most high-profile manufacturer of smartphones for western buyers. Still, we took note of the Skate at the time, as it looked like a pretty stylish Android with a nice, large screen and some decent hardware specs. In just a few months we’ll get a better opportunity to see what the Skate can do, with a planned UK release for this summer.
The company’s Director of Mobile Device Operations confirmed that British customers will be able to pick up the Skate in the early portion of Q3, but had no more specific release information available. There’s no sign of any plans for a US release, but a good showing in Europe could help build up the brand a little and give the company the momentum needed to introduce some hardware State-side in the future.
The Skate’s 800MHz processor isn’t state-of-the-art, but should handle modest Android usage without breaking a sweat. Like the CPU, the Adreno 200 GPU is also just behind the curve, but these compromises may help keep the phone’s cost down to a reasonable level. Where ZTE doesn’t skimp is on a large 4.3-inch screen. Look for the phone to ship running Gingerbread.
ZTE is still talking with UK carriers, and apparently no decision has been made yet regarding who will be offering the Skate.
