When Virgin Mobile USA said that users of its Samsung Intercept could look forward to an Android 2.2 update “sometime this spring”, we had no idea just how soon it meant. The company has posted a follow-up tweet clarifying that it meant VERY early spring, with a targeted release date around March 25.

Consider it a loose release date, since you might end up waiting until early the following week, but it’s safe to say that the update is on-schedule for a release before April. After all of Sprint’s problems with the Intercept, we were expecting Virgin to tread lightly, so it’s reassuring to see the carrier not dallying any more and finally getting the update out.

Right now, the only Froyo handset on Virgin is the LG Optimus V, but at 600MHz it’s a bit less powerful than the 800MHz Intercept. Even if the Intercept’s QWERTY keyboard isn’t your cup of tea, it’ll be nice to have another (relatively) up-to-date Android option. Could this be part of a push to get some decent Android systems on the no-contract carrier? We hope so.
