Last night, we checked-out Verizon’s new sign-up page for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Everyone’s been trying to get their heads around the phone’s launch plans, especially when that comes to US carriers. Much of the uncertainty has centered around Verizon, whether or not the Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone would really be exclusive to the network, and what would would be the nature of such exclusivity. When doing a search on Verizon’s site, we saw how a banner image displayed above the results then showed an “Exclusively from Verizon” claim for the Galaxy Nexus. It seems that might have just ended-up confusing people even more, as the text has now been removed.
As we mentioned when we first looked at this, we know for a fact that there’s a GSM edition of the Galaxy Nexus coming out, and a global release is planned, so claims that the phone will always, only ever be on Verizon are preposterous. Now, a limited period of exclusivity, sure, but are we talking about a staggered release, where Verizon might see the phone a week or two before the GSM version hits abroad? What would stop plenty of smartphone fans from importing that edition and using it on GSM networks in the States? How long would it be before one of those carriers starts selling that model itself? Maybe Verizon realized the asterisk and paragraph of tiny text it would need to properly qualify that exclusivity claim, and just thought it best to not bother at all.
