When we told you earlier today about the new delays rumored to be affecting the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus on Verizon LTE, one cause suggested for the change of schedule was a recent 4G outage the carrier’s been experiencing. While Verizon’s still being coy about discussing its Galaxy Nexus release plans, it took some time to confirm certain details about this outage.
While not a smartphone issue per se, the prevalence of Android devices on Verizon LTE has us paying special attention to this service interruption. It may have started with the Droid RAZR, or at least that’s what some of the first reports of LTE failures stemmed from, but over last night and into today, problems spread to other LTE devices.
Earlier this afternoon, Verizon made this statement concering the situation: “Verizon Wireless engineers have been working to resolve an issue with 4GLTE service that is affecting some customers’ 4G devices. 3G data and voice devices are unaffected. All customers’ voice calls and text messages continue to go through. In the past 24 hours, some 4GLTE customers have reported their devices are operating on 3G data service where they would normally get 4G. Some have reported no issues, others that data access is either intermittent or unavailable. We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.”
That’s interesting, because we’ve also heard reports of users losing 3G service in addition to 4G. Of course, that might not be a problem with the 3G network itself, but merely reflecting an influx of 4G users now crowding the towers. As we roll into evening, some users who were hit with outages are reporting their devices coming back to life. Others are without high-speed data altogether, and there are some who haven’t noticed any issues all day long. Considering the scope of these outages, though, we’re not in the least surprised that Verizon would want to treat its network with kid gloves while it investigates further; we’ll just have to be patient for the Galaxy Nexus.
