For those of us who like to run custom ROMs finding a good GAPPs package can make or break one’s opinion of the ROM — even though GAPPs are usually distributed separately from the ROMs themselves.
GAPPS, for those who don’t know, are the “Google Apps” that come with most stock ROMs. They used to come pre-packaged in custom ROMs, too, until Cyanogen got a C&D order from Google. Since then, most custom ROMs ship without GAPPs, and you have to get your GAPPs somewhere else.
Thanks to a tip from Kaik541, we’re happy to announce that Goo-Inside now has a CyanogenMod 9-capable version of GAPPs for Android 4.0.3-4.0.4 ICS. They even have a version that includes Face Unlock, just in case your ROM doesn’t.
Now for the bad news: if you’re already running a custom ROM and a different GAPPs package (like KEJAR or KOUSH), you’ll need to do a full data wipe to properly install GAPPs — otherwise the apps will fire and close immediately, if they open at all. If you want to go back to another GAPPs version you’ll need to do another full data wipe as well. I learned that the hard way. Twice.
