Ice Cream Sandwich is coming to Sony’s Xperia Play, or at least one day it will. In the meantime, Sony’s made a beta version of the phone’s ICS ROM available, but Play owners continue to await the release of the finished version of the update. Before that happens, the Android has at least one more maintenance update headed its way, but luckily it’s one with a few changes that actually sound useful.

The Play gets an Android update with this release, but only to Gingerbread 2.3.4. We’re more interested, though, with some of the other software tweaks that Sony’s prepared for this release. You’ll find some new functionality, like the ability to use the gamepad’s should triggers as shutter buttons or take a screenshot by long-pressing the power button. Video you shoot should look sharper, with the introduction of continuous auto-focus support in 720p mode.

There’s some new carrier stuff, none of which sounds very exciting, including Verizon’s VoD app and updates to Navigator. A few bugfixes are present in this update, including those addressing problems with screen orientation while charging the phone, as well as properly displaying recommended contacts. A nice security tweak lets you stop broadcasting your phone’s presence over WiFi with the mobile hotspot.
