At the end of October Sony announced its intentions to buy out Ericsson’s share of the joint-venture which tried hard to come back to a solid position on the market with its Android-powered smartphones in the Xperia line-up.
With Ericsson out of the Sony Ericsson equation, the Japanese company said, via a Senior Executive, that the Sony Ericsson brand will be completely phased out until mid-2012. From that point on phones made in Japan will be only wearing the Sony branding.
Also, stepping out of a 50-50 joint venture and becoming a 100% Japanese company, Sony is now looking forward to receiving support from the mother ship: “Sony is the world’s biggest entertainment company. <...> Now that we are a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Corp. we expect to gain from its assets on the content, technology and brand side“.
