A couple days ago, after posting information on its website indicating that the long-awaited Gingerbread upgrade that would bump Xperia X10 smartphones right past Froyo from Eclair, Sony Ericsson quickly backpedaled and announced that we’d still have to wait a little longer for the code. The company still hasn’t re-posted the Gingerbread upgrade information, but reports are coming in that the update is nevertheless going out, keeping SE on its earlier-reported schedule.

On Monday, Sony Ericsson posted on Facebook that the plan was to start getting the update out sometime this week. It played things a bit close to the wire, and we’re still waiting for an official announcement that distribution is underway, but it looks like the company managed to pull it off. Supposedly, the update’s availability is limited at the moment to X10 users in certain countries, but we don’t know yet just where that means. If you’re not seeing anything yet, realize that even though the process has begun, it could be some days before the update is available everywhere, and expect access to be carrier-dependent.

The update brings the X10 up to Android 2.3.3 and adds Sony Ericsson’s “Facebook inside Xperia” social network integration to the phone’s UI.
