Sony Ericsson first announced its Xperia Ray back in June. By early July, we had heard rumors of an August release date, but it wouldn’t be until September that the phone finally became available. That was in the UK, though, so what about a US launch? SE fans in the States now have their own opportunity to get the Ray, with online retailer Newegg starting-up sales.

Though it lists for about $450, Newegg has the Ray on sale for around $380, instead. Obviously, that’s for an unlocked, off-contract handset. The phone’s frequency support make it a good fit for AT&T in the States, or any one of several Canadian networks up north.

The Xperia Ray may have a difficult road ahead of it towards finding acceptance in the US if it’s not able to find a carrier willing to subsidize it. Its off-contract price is high enough to act as a deterrent (especially once this sale’s over), and the phone’s specs may not be substantial enough to overcome that obstacle. If we were talking about some dual-core 3D wonder, that would be a different story, but it’s hard to justify dropping this kind of change on what’s starting to look more like a mid-range phone as time goes on.

The Xperia Ray features a 3.3-inch FWVGA screen, a single-core 1GHz processor, and an eight-megapixel camera.
