Yesterday Sony Ericsson posted on Facebook about the long-awaited Gingerbread update for the Xperia X10. The news was promising that the code could arrive as soon as this week, basically dependent on carriers OKing it. While you’re still stuck waiting for that approval if you’re running a carrier-branded X10, the rest of you X10 owners can now make the leap from Eclair to Gingerbread, thanks to Sony Ericsson releasing the update for un-branded X10s.
The myriad changes and features of Gingerbread and Froyo combined aren’t all Sony Ericsson has in store for users, also including Xperia-specific tweaks that provide deeper Facebook integration with Android, facilitating the sharing of content. Considering that X10 users have been stuck on Eclair for the past nine months, this package looks like it’ll be quite the treat.
There are some hazards involved with the update. You’ll lose the ability to restore old backups, and will forfeit any data stored on the phone’s internal flash (microSD is safe). That’s nothing surprising for an upgrade, but be aware. A few pre-installed apps will also be saying bye-bye as you move to Gingerbread.
Head on over to SE’s site to download its PC Companion software you’ll need to install the update. Those of you still waiting for carrier approval, be patient; hopefully you’ll be seeing the update in the next week or two.
