Just a couple days after Sony Ericsson’s “PlayStation phone”, made an out-of-focus video appearance, the handset is back in crisp clarity, finally giving us a nice, close look at the phone’s hardware and software.

We’re first struck with just how chunky the phone looks from the side. It’s actually kind of reassuring that the device appears built to handle the sort of abuse that can befall a controller at the hands of a gamer. Indeed, the sliding action to reveal the PlayStation-style controls seems very smooth and sturdily-built.

The phone’s screen looks like it may hold up to the expectations that it would deliver something comparable to Retina-level performance, with bright, high-contrast output. This time we can actually see the OS in action, showing off Gingerbread as well as the phone’s PlayStation app. While this phone didn’t have any installed games to check out, it just serves as confirmation that this isn’t just going to be a Sony-made gaming phone; it’s definitely a member of the PlayStation family, even if gets branded as a member of the Xperia tribe, as we’ve been hearing is likely.

A 2011 launch seems a certainty at this point, but the devil’s in the details. The latest rumblings point to a February launch, timed to go along with the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
