Last week, a couple of signs emerged, pointing to the release of Sony Ericsson’s Gingerbread upgrade for the Xperia X10 in the near future. Today the company posted an updated for Xperia owners to discuss the current state of the update, and it looks like we still have a short wait in store, with plans to begin distributing the update in early August.

SE touched on some comments it’s received regarding features that will and won’t make it into the Gingerbread release. The X10 will get the same “Facebook inside Xperia” treatment as other Xperia models, featuring social network integration into the phone’s UI. While the X10 will largely resemble the other Xperias once running Android 2.3, not all features make the cut; DLNA, for instance, will be absent.

While initially the update was supposed to revert the camera app to standard Android fare, Sony Ericsson has now confirmed that the X10′s existing app will stay, keeping features like face recognition in place.

This new release estimate is a bit off the end Q2 / early Q3 quoted earlier, but considering the big jump the X10 is making from Eclair to Gingerbread, we suppose the wait will be worth it. In the meantime, check out Gingerbread in action on the X10 in the video below.
