SiriusXM App Finally Gets Froyo Support

To be fair, Sirius XM‘s delay in supporting Android 2.2 Froyo wasn’t entirely their fault. Google updated some audio codecs (the way audio is transformed from digital data into audio that you can listen to) when they released Froyo. The older way of decoding audio didn’t work right, and in some cases didn’t work at all.

Some users experienced “fuzzy” or “low quality” audio from legacy apps on Froyo, while other’s were met with silence. Some of the more noteworthy audio apps hurriedly set their app compatibility to specifically exclude Froyo-powered devices so their users wouldn’t see their apps in the Market and get “poor audio quality” using their apps on Froyo. SiriusXM did something similar which rendered them “off the air” for those using an Froyo-powered phone.

Luckily they’ve had enough time to adapt to the new codec in Froyo and have released a new build of the software, version 1.1.0. For whatever reason, Sirius XM is not available in the Android Market but you can head over to SiriusXM.com/Android and download the app which comes with a 7-day free trial (after that you’ll need to buy a subscription).
