We love it when we see developers breathe some new life into old hardware. Though you might want to upgrade to the latest and greatest phones each time something new comes out, contracts and financial constraints leave many of us with aging smartphones. If you picked up a Samsung Omnia 2 i8000 back in 2009, and have held onto it, you’re in for a treat, as a working port of Android 2.1 is now available in beta, and most features are fully-working.

Sure, Eclair isn’t the cream of the Android crop anymore, but any kind of cross-platform OS hack is cool in our book, and this could open a whole lot of doors for the phone’s Windows Mobile 6 users. Right now, the beta version of the software has voice functions, WiFi, the GPS receiver, and the phone’s FM radio working under Android, along with access to the Android Market.

There’s still a bit of polish to be added before the beta tag is dropped, including ironing out remaining issues with freeze-ups, but it appears largely functional. If you’re up for some Omnia 2 hacking, give it a shot and let us know your thoughts.
