A mysterious Samsung QWERTY slider popped up earlier this week,and was quickly pegged as a possible Galaxy S2 variant headed to AT&T. Supposedly, the carrier would get two such smartphones, one with and one without a hardware keyboard. Now a new rumor says that the keyboard-bearing model may not be a Galaxy S2 after all, and the GS2 we were expecting for AT&T, the Galaxy Attain, may have just put in an FCC appearance.

BGR cites a “trusted source” informing the site that the i927 in those photos from earlier is not, in fact, a Galaxy S2. Part of the confusion was the model number, which had previously been tied to the GS2, that Samsung now appears to be using with a different handset. The i927 is still a nice-looking Android, and we’re curious to learn how its specs will measure up to the GS2, but it will not be joining that family after all. There’s also the confusing issue of the phone reporting a Honeycomb kernel, which just shouldn’t be on a smartphone; we’re not sure what’s going on there.

So where is AT&T’s Galaxy S2? There’s a chance it could be the Samsung i777 that recently appeared in FCC paperwork filings. The smartphone has the proper bands for operation on AT&T, and its size and form factor mirror the GS2. There are a few inconsistencies, like curious button placement in a rendering of the phone’s outline, but so far this has been the best candidate we’ve seen for the Galaxy Attain.
