A rumor last week said that Samsung’s Epic 4G on Sprint WiMAX would soon be getting a long-overdue Gingerbread update, with the target window for release sometime in late July. We didn’t get to see any documentation in support of the claim, so we’ve been on the lookout for something to help back it up, or at least redirect us onto the right path. Well, Sprint has gone ahead and left one big clue for us, suggesting that for some users at least, Gingerbread may already be officially available for their Epic 4Gs.
That lucky group would be brand-new Epic 4G owners; on Sprint’s page for the smartphone, its spec column has been updated to report that the handset is shipping with Android 2.3 already installed.
Now, we haven’t been able to confirm that anyone who recently ordered an Epic 4G actually received their phone with Gingerbread on it, but if it hasn’t yet, it should start happening in the near future. This also suggests that an OTA update is imminent, making that “late July” rumor look pretty darn plausible.
