A leaked build of Android 2.2 Froyo has appeared on the Internet for the Samsung Captivate, which has been promised an upgrade by Samsung. Right now, though, it’s unclear whether the build that’s floating around is a final release or if it’s an early build, the latter of which could present problems with future firmware updates.
In the past, early builds have shown up for other Android devices, most notably the Motorola Droid X and the Sprint HTC EVO 4G. With the former, Motorola told customers who upgraded to the early build that there was no easy way to upgrade to the official build, so those who impatiently upgrade had to downgrade their device to Android 2.1 before getting the official build, which would pave the way for future upgrades. HTC, on the other hand, was a bit more generous and had provided early adopters of its leaked Froyo build for the EVO 4G an upgrade path to the official solution. It’s unclear that if the leaked build is an unofficial one if Samsung would provide an upgrade path or not.
However, if you’re an impatient geek on the bleeding edge of Froyo for your Captivate, you can head over to XDA-Developers to give it a go.
