Sorry if we got your hopes up, Droid X owners; the rumored Gingerbread update that was just waiting for Verizon to send it your way, the one that could start rolling out as soon as Sunday, has supposedly been rejected by the carrier.

If this tweeted warning is correct, Motorola will have to take another stab at putting together a Droid X Gingerbread build that Verizon is satisfied with. There’s no indication yet as to what exactly Verizon had a beef with; we doubt it was a performance issue, as the Droid X should be more than capable of running Android 2.3 without issue.

According to the source, it may take Motorola another month to tweak the code, get it back to Verizon for review, and see the update sent out to Droid X users.

While this is certainly a setback, things are looking up for Gingerbread coming to older phones in general. Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 was all but dead from a software support standpoint, and now it’s set to get Gingerbread sometime this summer. When it comes to Android updates, we guess you just have to keep the faith.
